iPhone security expert Stefan Esser (ion1c) tweeted a few days ago that his untethered jailbreak method has been passed to iPhone Dev-Team. They are currently beta testing it and may become available soon via GreenPois0n, Redsnow or PwnageTool.

If you are a new iPhone user, you may have found this post because you accidentally updated to iOS 4.3.1 and were looking for a way to unlock your iPhone. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon this post and still on an older iOS, simply ignore (click Cancel) the iTunes message as shown above.

iOS 4.3.1 was just released a few days ago and it’s embedded with baseband update for iPhone 4 and 3GS. iPhone 4 now has baseband 4.10.01 while iPhone 3GS has 5.16.02. Currently there is no software unlock method available to unlock these basebands. The last version of ultrasn0w (version 1.2) was released back in late November 2010 to unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS. Ultrasn0w 1.2 can only unlock the following basebands:

• 4.26.08
• 5.11.07
• 5.12.01
• 5.13.04
• 6.15.00 (iPad’s baseband implanted into iPhone)
• 1.59.00 (iPhone 4)

For iPhone 4 users who don’t mind spending some money, you can unlock baseband 2.10.04, 3.10.01 and 4.10.01 using Gevey Turbo SIM. Otherwise, you can wait for the NCK (Network Control Key) unlock method which is currently being worked on by iPhone Dev-Team.

Jailbreakers who are adventurous enough to try iOS 4.3.1 can do the jailbreak with sn0wbreeze 2.4; although at present it is still tethered.

We predict redsn0w (version 0.9.8?) may be released soon that can support iOS 4.3.1. iPhone 3GS users then will have the option to flash their baseband to 6.15.00 (read risks here) that can be unlocked with ultrasn0w 1.2. Alternatively, hardware downgrade is also possible by replacing the baseband chip.
